It takes a lot to shock Maury Povich. But the talk show host admitted that even he couldn't believe it when a woman came on the show to prove her ex-boyfriend was the father of her twins - only to find that he was the father of just one of them.
Speaking about the revelation, which was aired live on his show, he admitted he did not even think this was possible.
He said: 'The show has very dramatic and very edgy themes which I think are played out in American society. The most unusual dramatic DNA theme was when the woman came on the show and had different fathers to her twins.'

Regina contacted the Maury show to try to prove that her ex-boyfriend Eric was responsible for her twins.

When Povich read out the DNA results and announced that Eric was the father of just one of her twins, he had to explain to a visibly shocked audience that this was not beyond the realms of possibility.

When it happened a second time on the show in 2008, to 19-year-old Alejandrina and her ex-boyfriend Jose, he was armed with the facts. He said: 'I want to explain about this situation. Its happened before on this show with fraternal twins. Less than one per cent of fraternal twins are from different fathers, to be accurate 0.001 per cent of the time and this is one of those less than one per cent.'

This occurrence is so uncommon that only a few cases have been documented in medical records.

In rare instances when twins are conceived by different fathers, it's called heteropaternal superfecundation, which occurs when two or more of a woman's eggs are fertilized by different men within the same ovulation period.

Before the results were read out, Alejandrina promised that she had not slept with anyone else while she was with Jose and broke down in tears when the truth came out.

He said his ex was a 'party girl' and said the test results proved she was a 'whore'.

Jose said he would take responsibility for the one child while Povich told Alejandrina that they would do another paternity test if she was able to find the father of her second child.

In May 2009, Mia Washington from Texas also gave birth to twins with different fathers.

She and her fiancé ordered a paternity test when they noticed the twins had very different features. She then admitted to having an affair.

Physicians at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System have cured 12 adult patients of sickle cell disease using a unique procedure for stem cell transplantation from healthy, tissue-matched siblings.
The transplants were the first to be performed outside of the National Institutes of Health campus in Maryland, where the procedure was developed. Physicians there have treated 30 patients, with an 87 per cent success rate. The results of the phase I/II clinical trial at UI Health, in which 92 per cent of treated patients were cured, are published online in the journalBiology of Blood & Marrow Transplantation. The new technique eliminates the need for chemotherapy to prepare the patient to receive the transplanted cells and offers the prospect of cure for tens of thousands of adults suffering from sickle cell disease.
About 90 per cent of the approximately 450 patients who have received stem cell transplants for sickle cell disease have been children. Chemotherapy has been considered too risky for adult patients, who are often more weakened than children by the disease.
“Adults with sickle cell disease are now living on average until about age 50 with blood transfusions and drugs to help with pain crises, but their quality of life can be very low,” says Dr. Damiano Rondelli, chief of hematology/oncology and director of the blood and marrow transplant program at UI Health, and corresponding author on the paper.
“Now, with this chemotherapy-free transplant, we are curing adults with sickle cell disease, and we see that their quality of life improves vastly within just one month of the transplant,” said Rondelli, who is also the Michael Reese Professor of Hematology in the UIC College of Medicine. “They are able to go back to school, go back to work, and can experience life without pain.”
Sickle cell disease is inherited. It primarily affects people of African descent, including about one in every 500 African Americans born in the U.S. The defect causes the oxygen-carrying red blood cells to be crescent shaped, like a sickle. The misshapen cells deliver less oxygen to the body’s tissues, causing severe pain and eventually stroke or organ damage.
Doctors have known for some time that bone marrow transplantation from a healthy donor can cure sickle cell disease. But few adults were transplanted because high-dose chemotherapy was needed to kill off the patients’ own blood-forming cells — and their entire immune system, to prevent rejection of the transplanted cells, leaving patients open to infection.
In the new procedure, patients receive immunosuppressive drugs just before the transplant, along with a very low dose of total body irradiation — a treatment much less harsh and with fewer potentially serious side effects than chemotherapy.
Next, donor cells from a healthy and tissue-matched sibling are transfused into the patient. Stem cells from the donor produce healthy new blood cells in the patient, eventually in sufficient quantity to eliminate symptoms. In many cases, sickle cells can no longer be detected. Patients must continue to take immunosuppressant drugs for at least a year.
In the reported trial, the researchers transplanted 13 patients, 17 to 40 years of age, with a stem cell preparation from the blood of a tissue-matched sibling. Healthy sibling donor-candidates and patients were tested for human leukocyte antigen, a set of markers found on cells in the body. Ten of these HLA markers must match between the donor and the recipient for the transplant to have the best chance of evading rejection.
In a further advance of the NIH procedure, physicians at UI Health successfully transplanted two patients with cells from siblings who matched for HLA but had a different blood type.
In all 13 patients, the transplanted cells successfully took up residence in the marrow and produced healthy red blood cells. One patient who failed to follow the post-transplant therapy regimen reverted to the original sickle cell condition.

A 21-year-old has been detained by police on suspicion of vandalising a grave and raping the newly-buried corpse of a woman.
He opened the coffin of a 39-year-old woman, according to police sources in Monchegorsk, Russia, in the far north region of Murmansk.
The man has not been named but is from the neighbouring region Arkhangelsk region.
A criminal case has been opened under an article of the Russian criminal code on desecration of the dead and their burial places.

The maximum punishment under the law would be three months in prison, or a fine of up to £400.
It is the second case of a sexual attack on a dead woman in the north of Russia this year.

He sleeps with the female python and even kisses it sometimes. “People sometimes call the boy and the snake husband and wife,” says a neighbor. The little boy’s mum believes that the snake has a magical spirit that protects the  family from sickness. Strange world!Or don't you agree?

Laura Ponce, a nursery school teacher in Lins, Brazil, suffers from a strange condition that causes her to cry ‘crystal’ tears. The white plaques start off as soft blobs inside her eyes, but they harden when she blinks in an attempt to expel them, finally emerging as solid white crystals.

This happens to her for weeks at a time, with a new plaque forming as soon as she expels another. It gets so bad at times that she has to take time off work, to remove as many as 30 plaque membranes from her eye in a day. “A clot starts to swell then I have to open my eye to take out the membrane,” she explained. “When it dries it hardens, it gets really hard, it hurts a lot.”

Ponce first noticed the issue when she was only 15 years old – her eye had started to fill with an unknown white substance. She immediately called her mother, Marissa, who was horrified by the problem. They tried removing the hard plaques from her swollen eye socket, but it wouldn’t stop forming. “We took it out and I was scared,” Marissa recalled. “We ran to the ER and the doctor on duty also got scared. The doctor was mystified.”

Ponce, now 35, has never been able to find a cure. She has experienced an episode every few months since then, but no one has been able to explain the mysterious ailment. “The whole family was shaken,” Marissa said. “We went chasing doctor after doctor.”

“I’m a nursery school teacher, I get angry about not being able to work,” Ponce said. “Two years ago it was infected for six months and I was taking 30 membranes out of my eye each day.”

Ponce is currently seeing Dr. Raul Goncalves, an ophthalmologist at Hospital de Olhos de Bauru, Brazil. According to him, there is no case like hers in medical literature, but he’s trying his best to find an explanation. “I have been an ophthalmologist for 25 years and I have never seen anything like it,” he said. “For these plaques to form so fast there could be only one explanation, it must be chemical.”

“Every time you blink, you’re lubricating your eye, and tears are made of three layers – a water layer, a mucin layer, and a fat layer,” he explained. “Each cell separately creates a product and when you blink you mix all this like a dough.” Dr. Raul’s guess is that the protein content in Ponce’s tears aren’t protecting the eye from bacteria. So, her eyes are forced to produce a second line of defence.

“The cornea jumps into action, and in Miss Ponce’s case the cornea’s surface can secrete keratin. This keratin together with other components causes the tear crystallization.” To counter the problem, Dr. Raul has prescribed silver nitrate eye drops, which seem to have provided some relief. Ponce is now experiencing fewer infections and is able to go back to work. But she can’t wait for the day when she’ll finally be rid of the condition.

“My expectation are for my eyes to be cured and for everything to be fine,” she said.

Penuel Mnguni was arrested for animal cruelty for the stunt - which he said showed his congregation's faith in God.
The 24-year-old self-styled prophet reportedly fed followers the slithery serpents while others looked on wincing.
Mnguni has been linked with controversial African pastor Lesego Daniel - who convinced his parish to eat grass and drink petrol last year.

He was released on bail while local courts decide on a date for his next appearance.
There were no conditions set for the pastor's bail.

Mishack Matlou, from a local animal rights group, said he was worried by the lack of conditions in the bond - because Mnguni reportedly fed his congregants rats.

He said: "When a child sees someone eating a snake, they will be traumatised."
Since the incident Mnguni's church has posted other bizarre pictures showing him riding a follower's back like a horse.
He also posted the text of a sermon on the church's Facebook page in a rant against his critics.
It said: "When you speak against me you curse the ground you walk upon.

"When I sleep angels are ascending upon me day and night, those angels are not from heaven, and they are from me because I command them."

Ng Lai-ying was convicted for using her breast to push against the officer at a chaotic protest in March.
The 30-year-old had earlier accused the cop of groping her – yelling the phrase "indecent assault" when she felt his arm on her chest.
But magistrate Michael Chan claimed she tried to use her "female identity" to harm the cop's reputation.
He said: "If I do not hand down a deterring sentence, the public might mistakenly think it is a trivial matter to assault police officers during protests."
A video from the protest – in Hong Kong on March 1 – shows Lai-ying being dragged away from the crows with a bleeding nose.
It has gone viral, picking up over 500,00 views on Facebook.
Ng Lai-ying was sentenced to for three and a half months behind bars but has been bailed pending an appeal.
