The peanut, being a popular food product, has a surprising number of alternative uses. In fact, 18th century farming specialist George Washington Carver discovered about 300 hundred different uses for peanuts. We are currently enjoying some of Carver’s food-related discoveries like peanut oil, salted peanuts, or peanut milk. Unknown to some people, he also found several unusual uses for peanuts. Here are some of them:
Peanut Soap – Peanut oil is composed mostly of monounsaturated fat. Fat is one of the primary ingredients of soap. Soap fats are responsible for displacing dirt and germs from our bodies, given its thick and sticky base. Peanut oil, for that matter, is thick enough to be a good component of soap. You can make peanut soap by mixing the oil with water, coconut oil, and lye.
Biodiesel Fuel – Did you know that the diesel engine was originally created for peanut oil? The first engines created by inventor Rudolf Diesel ran on various vegetable oils. Today, using peanut oil to power diesel engines can be futile. You can instead use a large amount of concentrated peanut oil to power biodiesel motors. The use of biodiesel motors is slowly gaining fame, given the current fuel prices. You might as well make an engine switch, if you want travel cost-effectively.
Peanut Laxative – As a laxative, the peanut is not as potent as some of the other known medicenes but it is certainly more delicious than any of them. If you are constipated, you can just snack on a bag of peanuts while watching a movie or a prestigious sporting event. The oil of the nuts will eventually act up on your tummy, improving your bowel movement in the process. Talk about having a good time before taking a dump.
Peanut Dye – Peanuts can never be used for producing colors like food coloring but its oil can act as the base of dyes. The slightly viscous and sticky fluid ensures that the color of dye will stick on many surfaces. If you are not satisfied with peanut oil as a base, you can just mix it with other ingredients to increase its viscosity.
Peanut Shampoo – After watching too many episodes of MacGyver, you probably want to make your own nifty invention. You can make your own shampoo made of peanut oil and Castilla Soap. Just mix the two ingredients in a blender and add scent enhancing materials like lavender or rosemary oil.
Peanut Insecticide – For some reason, ants and some pests do not like peanut oil. Some manufacturers of insecticides, in fact, add the edible oil when creating their products. Its components is believed to be toxic to several household pests. In any case, you can just splash a good amount of peanut oil at an ant line and they will all drown upon making contact with the sticky fluid.
Peanut Explosive – Peanuts can be used as an ingredient for creating nitroglycerin. The acids that make up peanut oil can act as substitutes for some of the acids used in formulating nitroglycerin. As dangerous as the resulting solution may be, you cannot readily create peanut nitroglycerin, so don’t worry about your favorite snack exploding inside your tummy anytime soon.
Peanut Axle Grease – At first, using peanut oil to create grease may sound silly. Grease is simply too viscous to be made from a relatively thin solution like peanut oil. Now, if you combine peanut oil with rosin oil and lime solution, you might be surprised with the result. You can start applying the resulting mixture on the axles of your automobile.
Peanut Seat Cushion – Some shelled nuts are hard to open even if you have powerful fingers. For these stubborn items, you can use them as substitutes for the contents of beaded seat cushions. Shelled peanuts may shatter when supporting heavy people. You can cover the nuts with a layer of cotton to give them added durability.
Peanut Shell Charcoal – Try observing peanuts when they are being cooked. You will notice that peanut shells do not burn easily. They can absorb decent amounts of heat and even help in cooking their contents. Look at those features closely and you will be reminded of charcoal. If you are peanut lover, you can store shells until you fill up an entire garbage bag. You can then use those peanut containers as good substitutes for charcoal.
Peanut Soil Conditioner – Burying peanuts along with your garden plants is a good idea. The nuts release oil that adds nourishment and richness to the soil. Your plants will be healthier since they can readily acquire food from the soil. If you want a more direct approach to soil conditioning, you can apply peanut oil on your garden. Its effects may be short term, but your plants will be instantly satisfied.
Peanut Glue – Peanut-based glue may not be the most efficient adhesive but it is pretty easy to make. During your free time, you can mix peanut oil with flour and corn oil. Transfer the mixture onto a frying pan then add boiling water. Stir the solution thoroughly. Once it stiffens, your peanut glue is ready to use.

It takes a lot to shock Maury Povich. But the talk show host admitted that even he couldn't believe it when a woman came on the show to prove her ex-boyfriend was the father of her twins - only to find that he was the father of just one of them.
Speaking about the revelation, which was aired live on his show, he admitted he did not even think this was possible.
He said: 'The show has very dramatic and very edgy themes which I think are played out in American society. The most unusual dramatic DNA theme was when the woman came on the show and had different fathers to her twins.'

Regina contacted the Maury show to try to prove that her ex-boyfriend Eric was responsible for her twins.

When Povich read out the DNA results and announced that Eric was the father of just one of her twins, he had to explain to a visibly shocked audience that this was not beyond the realms of possibility.

When it happened a second time on the show in 2008, to 19-year-old Alejandrina and her ex-boyfriend Jose, he was armed with the facts. He said: 'I want to explain about this situation. Its happened before on this show with fraternal twins. Less than one per cent of fraternal twins are from different fathers, to be accurate 0.001 per cent of the time and this is one of those less than one per cent.'

This occurrence is so uncommon that only a few cases have been documented in medical records.

In rare instances when twins are conceived by different fathers, it's called heteropaternal superfecundation, which occurs when two or more of a woman's eggs are fertilized by different men within the same ovulation period.

Before the results were read out, Alejandrina promised that she had not slept with anyone else while she was with Jose and broke down in tears when the truth came out.

He said his ex was a 'party girl' and said the test results proved she was a 'whore'.

Jose said he would take responsibility for the one child while Povich told Alejandrina that they would do another paternity test if she was able to find the father of her second child.

In May 2009, Mia Washington from Texas also gave birth to twins with different fathers.

She and her fiancé ordered a paternity test when they noticed the twins had very different features. She then admitted to having an affair.

An anti-rape device is a product used for preventing, or deterring, rape. In the 15th century, chastity

The rape-axe is a latex sheath embedded with shafts of sharp, inward-facing barbs. It is designed to be worn by a woman in her vagina like a female condom. If an attacker was to attempt vaginal rape, his penis would enter the latex sheath and be snagged by the barbs, causing the person excruciating pain during withdrawal and hopefully giving the victim time to escape. The condom would remain attached to the man’s body and could only be removed by a doctor, which would alert hospital staff and police. Once the device is utilized, the perpetrator would not be able to walk or urinate.

The device was revealed to the public in 2005, but did not get distributed until 2010, when 30,000 of the condoms were passed out before the World Cup in South Africa. Some critics of the product have objected to Ehlers’ invention, calling it “vengeful, horrible, and disgusting” and are opposed to its sale in drugstores. Other critics fear that the device could possibly enrage an attacker and further jeopardize the victim. Ehlers asserts that she created the product in gradual steps. “I consulted engineers, gynecologists and psychologists to help in the design and make sure it was safe.” Ehlers has also pointed out that some women in South Africa take extreme measures to prevent rape, such as placing razor blades in their nether regions.
belts were designed for this purpose. In the last ten years, a collection of anti-rape devices have been marketed in areas of the world that have high rates of sexual abuse, such as South Africa. One such device is the rape-axe, or anti-rape female condom. The rape-axe was invented by a South African woman named Sonnet Ehlers. She was inspired to create the product after working with a patient who had experienced a traumatizing event. The woman said to Ehlers: “If only I had teeth down there,” referring to the myth of the vagina dentata (or toothed vagina).
Physicians at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System have cured 12 adult patients of sickle cell disease using a unique procedure for stem cell transplantation from healthy, tissue-matched siblings.
The transplants were the first to be performed outside of the National Institutes of Health campus in Maryland, where the procedure was developed. Physicians there have treated 30 patients, with an 87 per cent success rate. The results of the phase I/II clinical trial at UI Health, in which 92 per cent of treated patients were cured, are published online in the journalBiology of Blood & Marrow Transplantation. The new technique eliminates the need for chemotherapy to prepare the patient to receive the transplanted cells and offers the prospect of cure for tens of thousands of adults suffering from sickle cell disease.
About 90 per cent of the approximately 450 patients who have received stem cell transplants for sickle cell disease have been children. Chemotherapy has been considered too risky for adult patients, who are often more weakened than children by the disease.
“Adults with sickle cell disease are now living on average until about age 50 with blood transfusions and drugs to help with pain crises, but their quality of life can be very low,” says Dr. Damiano Rondelli, chief of hematology/oncology and director of the blood and marrow transplant program at UI Health, and corresponding author on the paper.
“Now, with this chemotherapy-free transplant, we are curing adults with sickle cell disease, and we see that their quality of life improves vastly within just one month of the transplant,” said Rondelli, who is also the Michael Reese Professor of Hematology in the UIC College of Medicine. “They are able to go back to school, go back to work, and can experience life without pain.”
Sickle cell disease is inherited. It primarily affects people of African descent, including about one in every 500 African Americans born in the U.S. The defect causes the oxygen-carrying red blood cells to be crescent shaped, like a sickle. The misshapen cells deliver less oxygen to the body’s tissues, causing severe pain and eventually stroke or organ damage.
Doctors have known for some time that bone marrow transplantation from a healthy donor can cure sickle cell disease. But few adults were transplanted because high-dose chemotherapy was needed to kill off the patients’ own blood-forming cells — and their entire immune system, to prevent rejection of the transplanted cells, leaving patients open to infection.
In the new procedure, patients receive immunosuppressive drugs just before the transplant, along with a very low dose of total body irradiation — a treatment much less harsh and with fewer potentially serious side effects than chemotherapy.
Next, donor cells from a healthy and tissue-matched sibling are transfused into the patient. Stem cells from the donor produce healthy new blood cells in the patient, eventually in sufficient quantity to eliminate symptoms. In many cases, sickle cells can no longer be detected. Patients must continue to take immunosuppressant drugs for at least a year.
In the reported trial, the researchers transplanted 13 patients, 17 to 40 years of age, with a stem cell preparation from the blood of a tissue-matched sibling. Healthy sibling donor-candidates and patients were tested for human leukocyte antigen, a set of markers found on cells in the body. Ten of these HLA markers must match between the donor and the recipient for the transplant to have the best chance of evading rejection.
In a further advance of the NIH procedure, physicians at UI Health successfully transplanted two patients with cells from siblings who matched for HLA but had a different blood type.
In all 13 patients, the transplanted cells successfully took up residence in the marrow and produced healthy red blood cells. One patient who failed to follow the post-transplant therapy regimen reverted to the original sickle cell condition.

There are millions of things about pregnancy that aren’t listed in books and that no one ever tells you about. For instance, did you know that being pregnant can cause you to have perpetual hiccups for months on end?.. And that’s not even the strangest.
Here are 26 strange and interesting pregnancy facts that I’d bet you didn’t know.
1.) During the second half of pregnancy your baby will pee about a liter a day. Where does all of that urine go you ask? The baby swallows it. Consider it your kid's first lesson in recycling.
2. When nearing the end of pregnancy, a woman's placenta produces more estrogen in one day than a non-pregnant woman will produce in three years.
3. It's common for women to experience change in skin tone during pregnancy. It happens about 90% of the time.Saying a pregnant woman is glowing is a common expression, but most people chalk it up to the woman's excitement about becoming a mommy. As it turns out though, glowing skin is a very real thing for pregnant women. While you're pregnant, the amount of blood in your body will increase by 50%. The extra blood ends up showing through the skin in many areas, particularly the cheeks. On top of this, hormones cause the oil glands to become more active, resulting in a softer, shinier appearance. When the increased blood flow combines with shine, the result is a noticeable glow.
4. Studies have shown that babies can taste what the mother is eating. Strong flavors like garlic are especially able to pass through the amniotic fluid.
5.Babies cry in the womb. Not because they're upset, more as practice for their big day.
6.Pregnant women and new mothers can lactate at the sound of a baby crying, even if it's not their baby.
7. The baby's fingerprints are formed within the first three months of pregnancy.
8. Your heart grows:Progesterone softens the joints. Your ribcage stretches out and, as your uterus grows, everything else in your body shifts about. Organs, such as the heart and live, enlarge too, due to their extra workload.
9. Your bones soften:High levels of the hormones oestrogen and relaxin cause ligaments throughout your body to relax, including those in your back. The extra strain on the muscles and joints of the lower back area can cause back pain.
10. Your body can swell anywhere.Extra fluid circulating can sometimes cause swelling (oedema) throughout your whole body, but more commonly in the ankles due to interstitial fluid building up.
11. Your skin changes.Hormones mean skin can dry out. Extra collagen in your skin tears when it stretches, causing stretchmarks. They won't go after the birth but may fade.Help your body - Use a body moisturiser to improve the condition of your skin.
12. Blue veins appear. Some people are genetically predisposed to varicose veins, some aren't. Light exercise and support tights may help.
13. Your womb holds a pint of water. At the start of pregnancy, your uterus is the size of a small Conference pear. By the end of the nine months it's more like an oversized watermelon, holding a baby and at least a pint of water, so it's not surprising you feel twinges as it grows, especially as it will be touching the bottom of your ribs. At 16-20 weeks you may feel slight pain caused by some ligaments beginning to stretch.
14. Your hair's thicker,Your hair becomes glossy and thicker due to the oestrogen receptors it contains. It is thicker because growth has slowed down and hair loss is reduced.
15. You're more stretchy .To prepare your body for childbirth, the hormone, relaxin, reduces cartilage and ligament density, so you can stretch parts of your body a lot more than normal.
16. Your hands tingle.Numbness and tingling may be a sign of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - pressure on a nerve where it passes into the hand at the wrist. Anyone can get it, but you're more at risk in pregnancy. It usually disappears after birth.
17. You produce more blood.Your total volume of blood is 50% higher than usual and cardiac output (the amount of blood pumped out with each heartbeat) increases by 40%. You manufacture 20% extra red blood cells to carry more oxygen around your body. It's normal to feel out of breath at times in the later months. But breathlessness can be a sign of anaemia so if you're concerned, ask your midwife to check your iron levels.
18. Your baby gets food before you. It's important to eat healthily in pregnancy. The baby will take all the nutrients he needs, but this can leave you lacking, especially in iron. Your GP can provide iron tablets if you're anaemic.Help your body - Vitamin C in a glass of orange juice helps your body absorb iron. Most breakfast cereals are fortified with iron, too.
19. You breathe deeper. As your uterus grows, the diaphragm is compressed, It seems difficult to breathe deeply, but you actually breathe more air.
20. Your pelvic muscles stretch.Incontinence caused by childbirth is decreasing as women get better at doing pelvic floor exercises.
21. Your face darkens. The ‘mask of pregnancy' is caused by a change of pigment in your skin across your nose and cheeks in a butterfly shape. It only seems to affect some women, but no-one knows why.
22. Your tummy develops a line. Some women develop a dark line on their abdomen in pregnancy. This is known as the linea nigra and is caused by higher melatonin levels, but it's not known why it develops. It tends to affect women with dark colouring more than those with fairer complexions.
23. Your boobs keep changing. Many women worry unnecessarily that breastfeeding will ruin the shape of their boobs. In fact, any change in shape is actually caused by the pregnancy itself and not by breastfeeding your baby. Proper support at this time is vital to support the muscles in your chest wall as there's no muscle tissue in your breast.
24. Your teeth need extra care.It used to be said that a woman lost one tooth for each of her pregnancies. Thankfully, that's no longer the case for women who have a healthy, varied diet. But your gums are vulnerable now and gingivitis, or bleeding gums, is very common. It's important to make the most of the free dental treatment you are entitled to (up until your baby is 12 months old) and see your dentist and hygienist regularly.
25. Digestion slows.Progesterone slows your digestion early on so your body can absorb more nutrients to pass to your baby. It can cause constipation.Help your body - Have plenty of fluids, fruit and vegetables. Light exercise will also help digestion.
26. Your blood clots faster.Your blood clots more easily now, a protective mechanism so you don't bleed to death when the placenta is delivered. There's a concern that a clot in the calf may fragment, and cause clots elsewhere, particularly if you've had thrombosis or are overweight.
